The Business Continuity Institute: As product recalls increasingly dominate the headlines, Vince Shiers explains why careful planning is critical to ensuring companies are primed to respond no matter what the circumstances.

Product recalls are never far from the headlines. In our experience, if a company doesn’t have a recall plan before a recall incident, they will make sure they have one afterwards. We have come across recall plans that have clearly been compiled as a box-checking exercise for their retail customers or insurers and then left untouched until a crisis occurs. These provide a false sense of security as they are unlikely to be effective when most needed. A product recall plan should be user-friendly, focused and effective. It should also complement your crisis response plans and be an integral element of your overall business continuity management.
